Mary Chandler Pace passed away on April 24, 2012. She was born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1926, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was the youngest daughter of Ruth and A.B. Chandler. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jim Chandler and sister, Frances Cherner.

She was the beloved wife of Joseph Farrar Pace Sr. (Born October 28, 1925, and passed 1996) from Lawrenceville, Virginia. Mary attended RPI (now VCU) and majored in Art and indulged in a life-long love of the arts and creating her own paintings and sculptures. In the early 1950's she worked at WLEE radio and later Franklin Federal Saving and Loan.

While attending college she met Farrar Sr., a student at Randolph Macon College in 1948. They married in 1954 at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church while Farrar Sr., was a supervisor for the State of Virginia Health Department.

The following years she settled into rearing their 4 boys while Farrar Sr. started JoPa Company, a swimming pool construction firm in 1958. Raising 4 boys with love and understanding left little room for her personal pursuits.

However, once they were older, she became involved in The Woman's Club, Tuckahoe Woman's Club, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Sheltering Arms Hospital, investment club, and bridge club. All paled in comparison to her newfound passion for golf at the age of 55 and becoming a member of Hermitage Country Club.

The loss of her youngest child, William Alban Pace (Billy) at the age of 16 in 1980, took the wind from her sails but she managed to rise up in support of her surviving three sons until the sudden death of Farrar Sr. in 1996.

She moved from their Goochland farm to Randolph Square and enjoyed many years of golfing and traveling with friends. Visits from sons with expanding families and a calendar full of volunteering and other activities kept her fully occupied until some years later when she was diagnosed with dementia. She has been living at Westminster Canterbury until her death due to advanced Alzheimer's. The family wishes to thank the staff of Westminster Canterbury for their love and compassion.

She is survived by

Joseph Farrar Pace Jr. and Anne C. Pace and their three children-Joseph Farrar Pace III, Georgeanne Pace, Belle Pace;
David Chandler Pace and Sheryll Anne Pace and their four children-William Pace, Chandler Pace, Austin Pace, Elizabeth Pace;
Mark Steven Pace and Margaret W. Pace and their two children-Ellie Pace, Mary Frances Pace.

All of whom currently reside in Richmond.

She was loved and will be greatly missed by all that knew her infectious fun spirit, kindness, wit and civility. Memorial Service, 1:00 pm, Friday, April 27th at Westminster Canterbury, Interment Private. Nelsen Funeral Home and Crematory will be in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Billy Pace Memorial Fund, Blue Ridge School 273 Mayo Drive, Saint George, VA 22935.
