Paul Liebow, 68, of Williamsburg, passed away on April 30, 2012, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Paul was born in New York City and later lived in Port Washington, NY, before moving to Williamsburg, VA. He leaves his loving wife of 41 years.
Paul grew up in New York City and attended Stuyvesant High School. He then attended St. John's College in Annapolis, MD to immerse himself in the Great Books program. However, in his fourth year he was lured by recruiters to become a computer software designer when computers were a fledgling industry and, as he liked to say, "were as big as the room you're standing in."
As a consultant at CBS News, he wrote the software that projected the winners in the 1970 and 1972 national elections.
He then joined the Business Economics Group at W.R. Grace & Co. where he designed and wrote the software for the "President's Private Sector Survey on Cost Control" which then-President Ronald Reagan asked CEO Peter Grace and his staff to produce and oversee.
Outside of work, Paul became an enthusiastic runner, moving from short distance races to marathons, successfully competing in the New York City Marathon several times as well as a number of Long Island Marathons.
He was an avid sailor, reader and music lover and a caring and loyal friend.
After he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he became very proactive, through the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation, speaking at conferences and doctors' groups about his experiences in dealing with the disease.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Selena Costello, and father, Harold Liebow. In addition to his wife, Marlene, Paul leaves behind his nephew, Robert Dalessandro and wife, Rebecca, his grand-nephew, Marshall Dalessandro, and his step-father, Robert Costello.
Paul was a devoted animal lover, so the family requests that any donations be made to the Heritage Humane Society, 430 Waller Mill Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
A memorial service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg on Saturday, June 23, at 12 Noon. Online condolences may be expressed at www.nelsencares.com.
